How to Choose a Diamond: The 4Cs Guide
How to Choose a Diamond: The Complete 4Cs Guide
To choose a diamond you need to learn about the 4Cs method. This is the way to judge the quality of a diamond. The 4Cs method is made up of Color, Clarity, Cut and Carat weight. This guide will help you understand each of these things so you can make a decision.
1. Evaluate Diamond Color: Look for Colorlessness
First you need to check the color of the diamond. The Gemological Institute of America or GIA has a scale that grades diamonds from D to Z. The color a diamond has the more valuable it is.
The color of a diamond is about how hue it has. The GIA scale starts at D, which means the diamond is colorless and ends at Z, which means it has a color.
Remember, even small differences in color can make a difference in how beautiful and valuable the diamond is. If you want a diamond look for grades D-F. If you want a diamond that's almost colorless look for grades G-J. These diamonds are a good value.
2. Check Diamond Clarity: Assess the Purity
Next you need to check the clarity of the diamond. This means looking at the diamonds clarity grade to see if it has any inclusions or blemishes.
The clarity of a diamond is about whether it has any inclusions or blemishes. The GIA Clarity Scale has six categories and eleven grades.
Flawless diamonds have no inclusions or blemishes.
Internally Flawless diamonds have no inclusions. They may have minor surface blemishes.
Very Slightly Included diamonds have inclusions that are hard to see.
Slightly Included diamonds have minor inclusions.
Included diamonds have noticeable inclusions.
Included diamonds have inclusions that you can see with your eyes.
Remember, diamonds with a VS1-VS2 grade are a value. They may have some inclusions. You cannot see them with your eyes. They are cheaper than flawless diamonds.
3. Analyze Diamond Cut: The Sparkle Factor
You need to evaluate the cut of the diamond. This will tell you how well the diamond sparkles.
The cut of a diamond is what makes it sparkle. It is not the same as the shape of the diamond. The cut grade is about how the diamonds facets interact with light. If the proportions, symmetry and polish of the diamond are good it will sparkle beautifully.
The GIA Cut Scale has five grades, from Excellent to Poor. It looks at how bright the diamond's how much fire it has and how much it sparkles.
Remember, the cut of a diamond is the important thing if you want it to sparkle. You should always choose a diamond with an Excellent or Very Good cut grade even if it means the color or clarity is not as good.
4. Consider Diamond Carat: Understand the Weight
Next you need to think about the carat weight of the diamond. This is about how much the diamond weighs.
One carat is equal to 200 milligrams. Each carat is divided into 100 points.
Small diamonds are often described in points, like 0.25 carats or 25 points.
Big diamonds are described in carats and decimals like 1.08 carats.
The carat weight of a diamond affects its size, value and price.
Remember, you can save money by choosing a diamond that's just below a popular carat weight. For example you could choose a 0.90 carat diamond of a 1.00 carat diamond. You will not notice the difference in size. You will save money. Also a cut small diamond can look bigger and more brilliant than a poorly cut big diamond.
5. Balance the 4Cs Within Your Budget
Finally you need to balance the 4Cs based on what's important to you and your budget.
No single C is more important than the others. It depends on what you want and how money you have. Here is how you can balance them:
If you want the diamond to sparkle prioritize the cut and choose a color and clarity that're good but not perfect.
If you want a diamond choose a higher carat weight and a good cut but you may have to compromise on color and clarity.
If you want a high-quality diamond, balance all the 4Cs. Stay within your budget.
Remember you should always ask for certification from a recognized lab like the GIA and look at the diamond in person or, in high-quality pictures before you buy it. At Kef Diamonds all our diamonds come with certification and our expert guidance.
